Fitness: This trail is for very fit, boot hardened, people only. Must be able to walk up to 25kms a day over untracked high country, some steep terrain, and carry your pack with all your gear and 2kg of the shared food, which is provided, and will be cooked by the group. Some food drops will be made.
Accommodation is in back country huts, and one night in a super bin + supplied tent.
There will be no ‘backup’ vehicle.
It will be an experience of how the miners really did it.
This is a non-smoking trail.
Transport to trail start: Arrangements to be made with the Trail Boss
Itinerary:
Mon 23: Meet at Waikaka 12noon. Bus to trail start at Roxburgh – Coal Pit Road. Head west to the Pomahaka River, to Junction Hut for the night, where extensive workings can be seen.
Tues 24: Climb up the ridge onto the Whitecoomb Range to Gem Lake, crossing over Black Creek to the Nobbies and down to Norman’s Hut at McEwens Bush, for the night.
Wed 25: Sidle round to North Twin Creek and up Long Spur ridge to Stronach Hill 1334m on the Umbrella Mountains,
along to Crown Rock 1244m and down Archies Spur to the airstrip/super bin where we tent/bin for the night.
Thur 26: Return to the top of the Black Umbrella Range, round The Falkens Faces to Sandy Hill 1142m, and 2kms on turn down above Leithen Bush to a hut for the night.
Fri 27: Follow a 4WD track south, above the Leithen Burn, to Switzers Road, continuing overland to the Wendon
Valley for the night.
Sat 28: Short walk into Waikaka for the parade
