Fitness: This trail is for very fit, boot hardened, people only. Must be able to walk up to 20kms
a day over untracked high country, some steep terrain, and carry your pack with all
your gear and some shared food, which is provided, and will be cooked by the
group. Some food drops will be made.
Accommodation is in back country huts, woolshed, and one night in a supplied tent.
There will be no ‘backup’ vehicle.
It will be an experience of how the miners really did it.
This is a non-smoking trail.
Transport to Trail start: By bus after parking private cars in Wanaka.
Mon 22 : Meet early evening for the night in Wanaka.
Tues 23 : Bus to trail start at the top of the Crown Range.
Follow the DoC track along the top of the Range through Mt Allen 1492m,
Queensberry Hill 1531m, to Meg Hut for the night. Splendid views all day.
Wed 24: Follow creek beds and ridges on to the Pisa Range, with more wonderful views,
then drop down to Meadow Hut in the upper reaches of the Roaring Meg.
Thur 25: Head towards Luggate Creek on the Criffel Range, via a water-race and
old gold workings, to spend the night camping out in a tent, beside Luggate Creek.
Fri 26: Follow Luggate Creek to Little Criffel 1341m, and over to The Criffel Diggings
before descending the ridge via Criffel Peak 1282m to Criffel Station for
Sat 27: Short walk into Wanaka for the parade.
