Duration: 7 days Meet: 20th February Limit 80

This ride is a chance to see some spectacular views and a unique opportunity to visit the west side of Lake Wanaka.

Saturday: (Afternoon)- We meet at the Mt Burke Station turnoff, midway between Wanaka and Hawea. Evening meal provided.

Sunday: Starting at Mt Burke Station, we follow the shores of Lake Wanaka from Dublin Bay, passing Stevenson Island. From there we climb up the ridge between Wanaka and Hawea (some awesome sights) continuing along the top before dropping off to Dinner Flat. This is an 8 hour ride but well worth the effort. Horses will be tended to then put in a paddock for the night (a wrangler will stay the night at Dinner Flat with the horses). Riders will travel by bus to the Mt Burke base for the night.

Monday: Drive vehicles and floats to Dinner Flat, load horses, then proceed by road to Mt Albert Station at Makarora. An arrangement will be made for those who haven’t transport. Our base will be at the Mt Albert Woolshed. Once we are all saddled up, we cross the Makaoroa River and ride up the Willkin Valley, then return to base camp. Approx 5 hours ride.

Tuesday: We ride down the side of Lake Wanaka to Minaret Station, a great variety of scenery. Approx 7 hours ride. Cooks and Backups will boat cross the lake so your gear will have to be kept to a minimum.

Wednesday: Ride through the paddocks. Cross the Minaret Burn and on to West Wanaka Station. Approx 8 hours ride.

Thursday: From West Wanaka we ride up the Matukituki Valley, cross the river to cattle Flat then on up the Motatapu River (The Treble Cone Ski field is above us) and over Glendhu Hill to Alpha Burn Station. Approx 6-7 hours ride.

Friday: We travel above Glendhu Bay to Mt Roy walking track, a short journey along the road to Waterfall Creek. From there we head across to Hillend Station, climb over a ridge and then down Spot Creek to Spotburn Station. Approx 7 hours ride.

Saturday: A three hour ride down the Cardrona Valley to Wanaka.

This trail is for fit horses and competent riders. A mobile bar facility will be travelling with the backup.

  1. Hi Alistair,
Your trip sounds good this year (of course). The west coast girls are keen to join up again. Are reg forms available yet, I don’t seem to be able to find them on the internet.
    cheers Cathy

    1. They should be out any day now- we are genuinely sorry about the delay- there has been a few ‘gremlins’ at the printers.
